Participate in a Job Shadow experience
A job shadow is typically a half or full-day experience designed to provide a student with exposure to a particular career or industry. While job shadow experiences will vary from company to company, most experiences will involve a facility tour and time spent with an employee or other company representative observing work performed. This experience also provides an excellent opportunity to learn about a particular organization and possible future employment opportunities, develop professional contacts, and gain valuable insight into the organization’s hiring process and traits/skills the organization identifies as crucial to success.
Conduct an Informational Interview
An informational interview is a meeting with a professional in a specific career or industry. The goal of an informational interview is to research a particular career, learn about daily tasks associated with that line of work, and discover the traits and skills necessary to succeed in a particular profession. Additionally, an Informational Interview is a very effective way for students to identify a career path, make valuable industry connections, and uncover possible employment opportunities. An Informational Interview will generally last about an hour and should include a facility tour. This article provides tips on getting the most out of your informational interview.
