Call for entries 55th annual Camden County Senior Citizens Juried Art Exhibition

The Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission at Camden County College invites artists age 60 and older who currently reside in Camden County to submit their original work to the 55th annual Senior Citizens Juried Art Contest and Exhibition.

“This is a great opportunity for our seniors to share their talents with the county,” said Commissioner Melinda Kane, liaison to the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission. “We have some amazing senior artists in Camden County and this is their chance to have their works viewed and appreciated by a larger audience.”

Artists at any level of skill or experience are invited to participate, including amateurs and non-professionals as well as working artists. Artists may submit one entry that has been created within the past three years, is an original creation of the artist, and has not been submitted previously to a county or state art show. Categories of work include acrylic painting; craft; digital art; mixed media; oil painting; pastel; print; photography; sculpture; watercolor; and works on paper (drawing).

Artwork will be judged by an independent panel of artists. First-place winners in all categories will advance to compete at the state level in the New Jersey Senior Citizens Art Show.

Because the state’s 2021 show will be virtual-only, the county will create a virtual gallery for its contest and exhibition but will also provide gallery space for participating artists to display their submissions to the contest if they so desire. Artists do not have to submit artwork in person in order to participate in the contest and exhibition. To enter, artists must submit a registration form and high-quality digital photographs of their artwork. Approved submissions will be adjudicated and shared on the 2021 Virtual Senior Citizens Juried Art Contest and Exhibition website and social media pages starting on August 4, 2021.

The registration form is available beginning June 28, 2021 at the Commission’s webpage: www.camdencc.edu/senior-art-show/ . The deadline to submit the registration form and photograph is July 29, 2021. Approved submissions will be adjudicated and shared on the 2021 Virtual Senior Citizens Juried Art Contest and Exhibition website and social media pages starting on August 4, 2021. Visits to the gallery at the William G. Rohrer Center will be by appointment only.
For more information about the contest, including eligibility and artwork display rules and a registration form, visit camdencc.edu/commission or contact arts@camdencc.edu or call 856-874-6000.

The Camden County Cultural & Heritage Commission, founded in 1972, recognizes the role of the arts and local history in making our communities dynamic places to live and work. The Commission was established by the Board of Commissioners to act as the designated agency in Camden County to receive and administer the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Local Arts Program and the New Jersey Historical Commission County History Partnership Program.

Camden County College and Stockton University Partnership Creates Pathway for Camden Academy Students

Students at Camden Academy Charter High School will have multiple paths to complete two and four-year college degrees under a new agreement between Camden Academy Charter High School, Camden County College and Stockton University.

A signing ceremony for the Degree Path Partnership, attended by students and local dignitaries was held at Camden Academy on April 30.

“This event marks the beginning of an exciting new partnership that will provide an affordable and accessible path to a four-year college degree for our Camden Academy students,” said Camden Charter School Network Superintendent Dr. Conway “Camden County College and Stockton University share our commitment to promoting scholarship, character, leadership and service and we are thrilled our students will have the opportunity to continue their educations at these two institutions.”

The new partnership builds on the We Go To College (Now)! Program with Camden County College. Launched in the fall of 2019, 12 eleventh-grade students enrolled in the program taking college courses in their final two years of high school. Students who successfully complete the program will graduate with both a high school diploma and associate degree from Camden County College at no additional cost.

“Camden County College is continuously looking to create innovative partnerships with our local high schools and community members,” said CCC President Donald A. Borden. “This new agreement provides a unique opportunity for Camden Academy Charter High School students to earn an associate degree from Camden County College while in high school, and then seamlessly transfer into Stockton University to complete their final two years of a bachelor’s degree.”
Under the new agreement, there are three ways for Camden Academy students to be guaranteed admission to Stockton University.

  • First, students can be automatically accepted to Stockton fulltime if they graduate from Camden Academy with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and complete the admission application requirements.
  • Second, students who complete the We Go To College (Now)! program and earn an Associate of Arts Degree from Camden County College will be admitted as juniors to Stockton and be considered first- time college students.
  • If students don’t meet the previously listed paths to Stockton, they will be encouraged to initially matriculate into the Camden County College Transfer Pathways partnership with Stockton. That program allows them dual enrollment to Stockton and Camden County College, with a guaranteed admission to Stockton as juniors once they obtain their associate degree.

In addition to guaranteed admission to Stockton, Stockton will waive the admission application fee, provide on-site personal admissions advisement to prospective students and parents, provide on-site general college search and financial aid workshops and presentations, and will award competitive academic and partnership scholarships to qualified Camden Academy students.

Stockton president Harvey Kesselman said two graduates of Camden Academy are currently enrolled at Stockton, and four Camden Academy seniors, Michelle Soto Rodriguez, Hilarimar Fontanillas Difo, Dylan Santiago and Carla Alvarez, plan to attend Stockton in the fall.

“We are thrilled to offer this new opportunity to all Camden Academy students and hope to welcome even more Academy graduates to the Stockton campus in the future,” Kesselman said.
Academy Students in the We Go to College (Now)! Program said the program is giving them a head start on their college plans.

“What I like most about taking college courses is that I’m working at my own pace for the most part, and I don’t feel rushed,” 11th-grader Joscar Defrank said. “I was interested because it was kind of a head start in life.”

“Being able to complete two years of college before officially completing high school is a really big advantage that I could not pass up,” 11th-grader Giamani Nieves-Camacho “Both of my parents agree that it’s a great opportunity for any student.”

Free Tuition Program Signed into Law

The Community College Opportunity Grant program provides a last-dollar scholarship to attend a Community College for individuals in households earning $65,000 adjusted gross income or less. The program was first established in the state’s FY 2019 budget and assisted more than 18,000 students last year, including recent high school graduates and working adults. These students enrolled in a Community College and embarked on a pathway toward earning college degrees and credentials. This program expands economic opportunity while helping New Jersey build a productive and innovative workforce that enables economic growth and recovery.

“Camden County College thanks Governor Murphy for his leadership in making a community college education more accessible for New Jersey residents,” said President Donald A. Borden. “This program eliminates the financial barriers that restrict people from getting the post-secondary education they need to be successful in their careers and lives.”
New Jersey’s 18 Community Colleges, as the only educational institutions with statewide reach, provide essential opportunities to more than 300,000 New Jersey residents each year. Over 200,000 students – more than half of all undergraduate students in all public colleges and universities in the state – are enrolled in credit and degree programs at New Jersey’s Community Colleges. Equity and access priorities are advanced everyday with 50% of all students enrolled in New Jersey’s Community Colleges being nonwhite.
The Community College Opportunity Grant program is an important investment in students and in the state’s economic future. This tuition financial aid program supports the most vulnerable residents for whom a college education is unaffordable. This law puts the Community College Opportunity Grant program on par with other highly respected, need- and merit-based college support programs such as TAG and NJ Stars. As New Jersey’s residents face the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Community College Opportunity Grant serves as a pathway for the state’s residents to attain the education needed to move forward and succeed.

Here are the stories of two of those students:

Morgan McGrath
At 27 years old Morgan McGrath, completed her first college semester at Camden County College as a pre-nursing major in spring 2020, after a five-year gap in her education. The CCOG grant made it possible for Morgan to enroll in college. When she found out about the grant, Morgan says it was a huge relief knowing that she would have a way to pay for college and that she was closer to reaching her educational goals. She’s now completed three semesters at CCC and, although it’s been a challenging year with new obstacles, she says she’s so excited to have this opportunity to continue her education.

Luke Ottinger
Luke Ottinger transferred to Camden County College from another community college in 2018 to complete the Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing program. Luke became eligible for CCOG in the Fall of 2020. He chose an accelerated program despite the added difficulty because of extreme financial hardship. The CCOG grant made it possible for Luke to achieve his dreams. Luke has taken and passed his licensing exam and is looking for work as a Registered Nurse.

The Cougars are back!

Camden County College is pleased to announce the return of athletic competition for the Spring 2021 semester.

In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the tough but necessary decision to suspend athletic competition for the remainder of the Spring 2020 semester. Since that time, CCC has been exploring ways for student-athletes to return to competition in a healthy and safe atmosphere.

Currently, the programs are returning are Basketball, Men’s Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, Golf, Soccer and Women’s Tennis. Outdoor Track and Field is still to be determined due to the availability to compete at regular season events and Nationals.

Basketball has begun practicing and will tip off a ten-game regular season schedule on March 4. The basketball teams will practice and compete at off campus facilities while the gymnasium serves as the coronavirus vaccination site for Camden County.

Although no regular season wrestling matches have been scheduled at this time, Men’s Wrestling has also begun practicing. Baseball and Softball will begin practicing on February 22. Baseball is slated to toe the rubber on March 17 and Softball on March 30.

Soccer will begin practicing March 1 with their first match scheduled for April 2. Golf and Women’s Tennis should begin practicing mid-March. Our golf program is arranged to tee off at our home facility on March 29 and Women’s Tennis will begin their schedule in April.

CCC is adhering to all federal, state and local guidelines to ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes while providing them an opportunity to participate in athletics. All rostered student-athletes and participating coaches will undergo daily screening and temperature checks.

In addition, NJCAA Region XIX guidelines do not permit any spectators at indoor athletic events. Since fans are prohibited this semester, CCC will attempt to livestream as many events as possible or record events for the athletic YouTube channel.

Please continue to check the Camden County College Athletic website at www.camdenccathletics.org for schedules and updates on this continuously changing matter. You can also stay connected on Twitter @CamdenCCsports.

We are excited to see our student-athletes compete again. Go Cougars!

Student Tuition Statements Available

The IRS form 1098-T (Tuition Statement) is issued for each student enrolled and for whom a reportable transaction is made. Per IRS mandate, beginning in tax year 2018, CCC reports payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses, and no longer reports amounts billed for qualified tuition and fees. For a payment to be reportable, it must relate to qualified tuition and related expenses billed during the same calendar year. Amounts paid will be limited to the amount of qualified tuition and related expenses billed within the same calendar year. Please note that qualified tuition/expenses are billed on the day that a student registers, which may have been in 2019 for spring 2020 and in fall 2020 for spring 2021. The form is available on the college website through MyCCC Portal. Students do not have to be currently enrolled to access their Self-Service account. Students who do not remember their password, may contact the Help Desk at 856-227-7200 x4900. To access the form, log into MyCCC portal, go to Payment Center through Self Serve or WebAdvisor, Under Financial Information tab, click on View My 1098-T Forms, then select the year you wish to view.

New Data Science program offered this spring at Camden County College

Camden County College is now offering a new Data Science program designed to prepare students for a career in Data Science and Data Analytics. The new program is the first of its kind in New Jersey.

Topics covered in the new program include data acquisition in both structured and unstructured formats, data security, ethical responsibility, and effective communication of informed tactical and strategic objectives. The curriculum also covers cleaning, modeling, visualization, and analysis of data. Using a hands-on, applied approach, students in the program will learn to identify patterns and relationships in large data sets and to resolve questions and problems through data driven decisions.

“CCC’s Data Science program will prepare you to enter a career in the growing field of data science with the skills sought after by today’s most innovative companies,” said Camden County College President Donald Borden. “With the highest selection of programs, the most available transfer options, and one of the lowest tuitions in the region, CCC is your best choice.”

Program graduates will develop solid analytical reasoning, critical thinking and technical skills to analyze and present data to enhance understanding and decision-making. They will learn to work independently or as a member of a team with modern technical tools to accomplish data life cycle project goals and meet deadlines. They will also gain an appreciation for ethical decision-making principles for the analysis, management and presentation of data.

CCC’s courses for the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Data Science will be offered beginning on January 20. To learn more, visit the Data Science program page. For additional information, contact Professor Joseph Diaco at jdiaco@camdencc.edu
