Grant Writing for Non-Profit Organizations

This course will explore the types of grants (national vs. local) available to NPOs, as well as their primary sources, including foundations, corporations, and government. It will also explore national trends in philanthropy, the importance of research, and, of course, the preparation of grant applications, including Letters of Intent (LOl), program planning, needs assessments, methodology, outcomes and data, logic models, and success stories.Objectives:Participants will be able to identify, understand, and create the key elements in a grant proposal.Course Content:Participants will be exposed to the key elements in grant proposal, including:

  • Cover letter: provides an introduction aligning applicant to the proposed grant, establishes NPO’s mission, lists relevant points of contact for future communication, and introduces main goals – Need assessment and objectives- Methodology and evaluations
  • Overview of the applicant, including mission and history, highlighting both success of applicant and similarities to funder.- Background, – Success stories
  • Budgets and narratives
  • Required attachments, including – 501-c-3, – Board List, – Organization Budget, – Program Budget, – Strategic Plan Summary, – Key Staff Bios, Audit, – 990 or other financial filings, – Deficit Explanation (if needed).

  • Importance of follow-up
