What to Expect
Dental Radiology courses, DAS-121 & DAS-122, are evening courses designed to provide the currently employed dental assistant or dental personnel with the opportunity to gain knowledge of the origin, production, and utilization of radiation and digital radiography. Emphasis is placed on concepts of radiation safety and patient management.
Through lecture and laboratory sessions, students will gain practical experience in exposing dental radiographs on manikins, as well as processing, mounting, and evaluating dental radiographs of diagnostic quality. Students will develop an understanding of the extra-oral panoramic survey and intraoral surveys using the paralleling and bisecting techniques with film, digital image receptors, and digital sensors.
Students will perform two full-mouth series on patients to 100% clinical proficiency after passing both lecture and laboratory portions. Although some patients may be provided by the College, the student may need to identify and schedule patients who have a clinical need for dental radiographic imaging.
Course Completion Information
Following successful completion of this course, the student will continue into the Radiology Clinical Experience course, DAS-122, where they will complete the necessary requirements set by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Once both courses are successfully completed and the Radiology Health and Safety (RHS) exam is passed, the student will be able to finalize the steps necessary to apply to the DEP for a New Jersey Limited – Dental Radiographer License, LRT(d).
NOTE: Completion of this course does not provide the student with the authority to take radiographs in a dental setting /office of any kind.
