Cued Speech (NCSA)
Performance in Cued Speech is based on the Basic Cued Speech Proficiency Rating (BCSPR) developed by Dr. Walter Beaupre. The BCSPR is designed to assess the current proficiency as well as diagnose those areas where cueing skills need further development.

The Test
The BCSPR consists of four sections (cueing symbols, words, short phrases and a written story) and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete. During the first three sections, interpreters are allowed to take their time and even recue any item that he or she feels was done incorrectly. A videotape of the interpreter’s performance is sent to New England Cued Speech Services for rating.

The Score Sheet
The BCSPR test is evaluated as follows:

    • An oral numerical rating between 0.0 (proficient) and 7.0 (non-proficient)
    • A count of consonant and/or vowel errors
    • A diagnostic profile indicating areas for improvement

Results
Results of the BCSPR are reported to the EIPDC at Camden County College as well as to the National Cued Speech Association (NCSA). The information is used to qualify the interpreter for certain NCSA certifications.

Currently, there is no national test for Cued Speech transliteration. The Basic Cued Speech Proficiency Rating (BCSPR) will be used until a national test has been approved.
