Mission
Statment
The mission of the department of Language &
Culture is, in accordance with the philosophy statement of the National
Standards for Foreign Language education, to provide students with the
tools to communicate successfully in a language other than English through
the refinement of speaking, reading, listening and writing in order to
succeed in a culturally diverse world. The department is dedicated to
promote cross-cultural awareness, by developing a high degree of understanding
and appreciation for other cultures in all students, as they compare and
contrast these cultures to their own.
The members of the department of Language & Culture recognize their
obligation to serve as advisors and mentors to language students, to actively
participate in the life of the college and community and, to provide leadership
in language teaching and learning through professional development.
Goals
and Objectives
1. Goal: to develop
in students a facility and proficiency in the target language
Objectives:students will develop proficiency in listening and reading
comprehension, and in oral and written expression at a level stated in
the National Standards of Foreign Language education:
Standard 1.1: Students will engage in conversations, provide and obtain
information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
Standard 1.2: Students will understand and interpret written and spoken
language on a variety of topics.
Standard 1.3: Students will present information, concepts, and ideas to
an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
2. Goal: to develop
in students an awareness and compliant response to the target culture.
Objectives:
Standard 2.1: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship
between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied.
Standard 2.2: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the relationship
between the products and perspectives of the culture studied.
3.Goal: to connect with other disciplines and acquire information.
Objectives:
Standard 3.1: Students will reinforce and further their knowledge of other
disciplines through the foreign language.
Standard 3.2: Students will acquire information and recognize the distinctive
viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its
cultures.
4. Goal: Develop insight into the
nature of language and culture
Objectives:
Standard 4.1: Students will demonstrate understanding of the nature of
language through comparisons of the language studied and their own.
Standard 4.2: Students will demonstrate understanding of the concept of
culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
