In the 1600's Europeans published fascinating stories about the New World to entice people to move to the American Colonies. A Brief True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia was printed by Sir Walter Raleigh to generate interest in his expeditions.25 Lord Baltimore lured settlers to his Maryland Colony with stories of fortunes to be made.26

Several years later, supporters of the Revolutionary War participated in numerous public relations activities. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson and Samuel Adams used their propaganda skills to gain support for their cause, a cause that many citizens cared little about.

They saturated the media over a 20-year period, through the use of newspapers, pamphlets, town meetings and sermons. To build public support for ratification of the United States Constitution, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay wrote the 85 Federalist papers in 1787-88.
