Hello,
Everyone!
In
addition to the advisement information enclosed, there are
a number of cultural/community service opportunities happening
during the rest of the semester. Please take advantage of
any that peak your interest, and I especially hope to see
you at the scholarship/transfer workshop on April 2nd.
Scholarship/Transfer
Opportunity: I have been telling you about this workshop
for awhile, but now I have all the details. FOR THOSE OF
YOU WHO WILL BE GRADUATED IN DECEMBER, 2009 OR MAY, 2010,
this is an important workshop to help you prepare to transfer
successfully to four-year colleges and universities. At
four-year schools the admissions process happens almost
a year ahead of time, and this workshop will help you understand
what to do during the summer and fall of '09 in order to
transfer during the fall of '10. We also will have a guest
speaker, the Assistant Director of the Honors Program at
Rutgers University-Camden, who is a CCC graduate. He will
be talking both about the process of transferring from CCC
to a four-year school and about the Honors Program at Rutgers.
This workshop is only open to Honors Program students (and
their parents if they will be helping in this process and
would like to attend), so please come if you are able. We
will meet from 3:30-5:00 in Madison 107 on the Blackwood
Campus on Thursday, April 2nd.
Cultural
Opportunity, Politics/Social Work/Education: From April
3-5, Rutgers Camden is sponsoring a conference on "Children
and War". The conference is free and includes many
speakers; I thought it might be of interest because a number
of you who just joined the program chose to write about
child abuse in your application essays. One of the speakers
is Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoir of a
Boy Soldier. Details about the conference are at http://childhood.camden.rutgers.edu
Cultural
Opportunity, Film: On Tuesday, April 28th at 7:00 in Civic
Hall in the Madison Connector Building on the Blackwood
Campus, there will be a panel speaking about Films of the
60's, as part of the College's celebration of its 40th anniversary.
We will have speakers from CCC and elsewhere, including
the Assistant Director of the Honors Program at Rutgers,
Camden, who teaches film studies.
Cultural
Opportunity, Music: On Monday, May 11th at 7:30 p.m. in
Lincoln Hall, Blackwood, the Choir/Orchestra will present
"The Music of Ray Charles". Call X4364 for further
information.
Cultural
Opportunity, Dance: On Saturday, March 28th at 8:00 p.m.
in Lincoln Hall, Blackwood, the CCC dance program will present
its spring concert, "Body Talk". Call X4364 for
ticket information.
Cultural
Opportunity, Theatre: The Theatre department will present
its spring musical, "City of Angels", on May 1,
2, 3, 8, & 9 at 8:00 p.m. in Lincoln Hall, Blackwood.
Contact the theatre department at X4364 for ticket information.
Cultural
Opportunity, Art: From April 7th - May 1st, the art department
will host a Student Show in the gallery in Lincoln Hall,
Blackwood. The opening reception for the show is Tuesday,
April 7th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The opening reception is a
chance to meet the artists and hear about their works, and
grab a light snack before or after class :
Service
Opportunity: A reminder that the College is hosting an Open
House for High School Juniors and Seniors on Saturday, April
25th. If you would be interested in helping to greet prospective
students or give campus tours, please contact Rosemary Schamp
at X4941.
Cultural
Opportunity, English, International Studies & Genetics:
Also, a reminder about the ongoing Poe lecture series, China
Lecture series, and Coriell Institute Personalized Medicine
Information Session, all of which I sent you in the last
two newsletters.
So,
lots to choose from, and I hope at least some of it fits
in with and adds richness to your already busy lives. If
you need extra Cultural/Community Service Narrative Report
Forms, please drop by or send me an e-mail, and I can send
it to you electronically. Hope to see you on April 2nd.
Let me know if you have questions about any of these events.
Take
care,
Jennifer
Hoheisel

Hello,
Everyone!
I know
you are probably in the throes of exams and papers due before
Spring Break, but I wanted to pass on a number of cultural/service
opportunities to you, since many of them are happening in
March. Also, I met last week with the Director and the Assistant
Director of the Honors Program at Rutgers Camden (the Assistant
Director is a CCC graduate). I was very impressed both with
the two of them and with their program, and I will be sharing
some more specific information about Rutgers as part of
the scholarship/transfer workshop noted below. Finally,
the list of course offerings for Fall '09 is shaping up
nicely, and I will send out a complete schedule after spring
break, so that you have the information before the advisement
period and priority registration in April. Meanwhile, good
luck with your exams/papers, and feel free to e-mail or
stop by anytime.
Service
Opportunity: On Saturday, April 25th, the College will be
hosting an Open House for high school students and their
parents. They are looking for current CCC students who might
be willing to act as greeters/hosts, and they thought that
those of you in the Honors Program would be terrific. If
you are interested in volunteering, please contact Rosemary
Schamp at X4941 or in Roosevelt 107, Blackwood Campus.
Academic/Cultural
Opportunity: Enclosed is a brochure that lists 5 programs
about Edgar Allan Poe. Some are academic lectures and some
are performances. They all sound interesting, and any one
of them would count toward the cultural/community service
requirement. Eileen Radetich of the English Department has
arranged the series, and she has brought in some terrific
programs in the past.
Academic/Cultural
Opportunity: I've also enclosed a brochure that describes
a program that would be of interest to those of you in the
sciences as well as any of you who are fascinated by the
advantages and implications of genetics research. The Coriell
Institute has started a program to gather genetic information
from 10,000 people and to use that data both to help the
individuals make better health choices and to provide information
for further genetic research. They are giving three presentations
about it at CCC this spring. If you go to the presentation
you will have the opportunity to participate in the study,
but you certainly don't have to - it's worth just hearing
about some cutting edge science, presented for a general
audience.
Scholarship/Transfer
Opportunities: Lastly, I've enclosed a flier from Vanessa
McMasters about Transfer Events this semester, and I want
to remind you that there will be a special Scholarship/Transfer
Workshop just for Honors Program students on Thursday, April
2nd at 3:30 (location to follow).
That's
all for now. Take care,
Jennifer
Hoheisel

Now
that the Spring semester is underway, I wanted to let you
know about some upcoming opportunities for cultural/community
service events. I also wanted to clarify the fact that you
are required to participate in at least three of these during
your whole time at CCC, not three each semester. Of course
we would absolutely love to have you take advantage of as
many as you can, but we also know that some students are
very busy juggling work, school & family obligations.
I have enclosed another copy of the narrative report form
that you fill out after these events, just in case you no
longer have one around.
We
are welcoming 24 new students to the Honors Program this
semester, so we now have nearly 100 total. I told them that
less than 3% of the students are invited to apply, so congratulations
again on being the "cream of the crop"!
I hope
those of you enrolled in Honors Courses this semester are
enjoying the experience so far - we will be asking you for
feedback, both good and bad, later this term. We also have
a nice list of course offerings shaping up for Fall, and
my plan is to send those to you in March so that you can
look them over before the advisement period/priority registration
in April.
Meanwhile,
enjoy both the snow now and the 50 degree weather we're
supposed to have this weekend!
Cultural
Opportunity: See the enclosed brochure about a series of
lectures about China. The woman who is speaking on March
11, Deanne Lee, has won 5 Emmy awards, so we are excited
that she agreed to come to campus.
Scholarship/Transfer
Opportunity: On Thursday, April 2, at 3:30 there will be
a workshop particularly designed for Honors Program students
who will be graduated in December 2009 or May 2010. It will
help you figure out what needs to be submitted to whom and
when, as you apply for both admission and scholarships/financial
aid at four year colleges and universities. Details about
the location of the workshop will be sent later in the semester,
but please save the date if you want to learn about how
to put yourself in the best possible position during the
process of transfer.
That's
all for now, but I will send along more opportunities as
they emerge.

Dear
Honors Students:
Now
that you are settled into your fall classes, it's actually
time to start thinking about Spring, 2009! From October
20 - 31, the College has its advisement period; this is
just before priority registration, which starts on November
3rd. For those of you who are new to CCC, this priority
registration is when you register for spring classes without
making a payment right away and when you have the best chance
of getting a schedule that you want. As you may remember,
I would like to meet with each of you during this advisement
period so that you can choose an honors course (or courses)
for Spring, 2009, and so that we can talk about your overall
academic program.
So,
can you please give me a call or send me an e-mail so that
we can schedule an appointment for that advisement period?
I have office hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,
but I have a lot of flexibility on Mondays and Fridays too.
My phone number is: (856) 227-7200, X4676, and my e-mail
is: jhoheisel@camdencc.edu Meanwhile, there are lots of
cultural/community service opportunities listed below, as
well as a reminder about the Scholarship/Transfer workshop
on Monday, October 20th. I know that several of you have
already attended some of the lectures listed in the last
newsletter, and I also heard that a few of you are making
arrangements to tutor at the Camden Campus. Keep up the
good work!
REMINDER:
Scholarship Opportunity just for members of the Honors Program:
On Monday, October 20 from 3:30-5:00 in Madison 311 on the
Blackwood Campus, we will have three speakers: first will
be Hannah Silver, a CCC graduate who is now finishing a
PhD at Jefferson; she will be speaking about continuing
your education beyond CCC. Next will be Vanessa O'Brien-McMasters,
our Director of Transfer Services, and she will be explaining
some very important information about the deadlines and
procedures for transferring to four-year institutions: the
process is different and takes almost a year at a four year
school, so if you are planning to transfer in Fall, 2009,
now is when you need to be thinking about it. Finally, I
will be speaking about the process of applying for scholarship
and financial aid at four year colleges and universities.
So, there is lots of good information packed into a single
meeting; please do come if you are able.
Cultural
Opportunity: Music. On Monday, October 13th at 2:30, a modern
jazz group called Kneebody will be performing at Dennis
Flyer Theater on the Blackwood Campus, and there is a Q
& A period afterwords. This is a FREE performance for
students, and they are giving a second performance later
that night, at 7:00, which will cost $7 to attend. According
to Mike Billingsley, a music professor here, this group
is quite amazing, and he was very excited to be able to
have CCC be part of their tour. Any questions, contact Professor
Mike Billingsley, X4563
Cultural
Opportunity: Politics. On Tuesday, October 14th at 7:00
p.m. in the CIM auditorium on the Blackwood Campus, Marilyn
DiGiacobbe will be giving a lecture called "Inside
the West Wing", based on her seven years working inside
the White House. The lecture is FREE and is open to the
public as well as the CCC community. Any questions, contact
Professor Donnie Hughes at X4319.
Cultural
Opportunity: Film. This fall CCC is hosting an International
Film Series focusing on French Psychological Thrillers.
The next two screenings are "With a Friend Like Harry"
on Thursday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. and "Cache"
on Thursday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. Both films are FREE
and are being shown in Civic Hall, Room 205 of the Madison
Connector Building on the Blackwood Campus. Any questions,
contact Professor Pablo Echeverria, X4496.
Community
Service Opportunity: Human Services Club. If you are looking
for a way to participate in the wider community, consider
joining the Human Services Club. Past projects of the organization
include working with the Ronald McDonald House, the Anna
Semple family shelter, and the Voorhees Pediatric facility.
If you might be interested, bring your hearts and your hands
to their future meetings: Wednesday, October 15 at 3:30,
Wednesday, November 12 at 3:30 or Tuesday, December 2nd
at 3:30. All meetings are in Room 202 of the Community Center
on the Blackwood Campus. Any questions, contact Professor
Karen Marinoff at Curiokids@comcast.net or Professor Karen
Oliver at Karglen1@msn.com
Cultural
Opportunity: Book Club. The October selection for a campus-wide
student/faculty/staff book club is "the art of happiness:
a handbook for living", which is written by the Dalai
Lama and Dr. Howard Cutler. A meeting to discuss the book
will happen from 7:00-8:45 p.m. in the Cyber Café
(Room 117) of the Cherry Hill Rohrer Campus on Tuesday,
October 28. Any questions, contact Librarian Barbara Laynor
at (856) 874-6001.
Cultural
Opportunity: Drama. The fall play selection by the CCC theatre
department is Arthur Miller's The Crucible. The student
ticket price is $8.00, and the performance schedule is as
follows: December 5 at 8:00 p.m., December 6 at 8:00 p.m.,
December 7 at 3:00 p.m., December 12 at 8:00 p.m. and December
13 at 8:00 p.m. Come support your fellow students and enjoy!
Any questions, contact Professor Marjorie Sokoloff, X4737.
As
you can, there are lots of good opportunities to participate
in more than just your classroom experiences here at the
College. Don't forget that any of these events would not
only be good in their own right but would also count toward
the Honors Program requirement for three cultural/community
service activities. If you need any more of the narrative
report forms, just e-mail me or stop by my office. I look
forward to meeting with you later in the month.
Sincerely,
Jennifer
R. Hoheisel

9/9/08
Dear
Honors Students:
Now
that you have had a chance to begin your fall classes, I
wanted to give you some more information about the Honors
Program and to tell you about several upcoming opportunities.
I plan to pass on information like this every four-six weeks,
although I will eventually switch to an electronic format
(as the college is now in the process of enabling you to
forward e-mail from your school account to your preferred
account). At any rate, there is lots to share already, so
I wanted to get this out to all of you, especially those
of you that I did not have a chance to speak with at the
President's Reception.
First
of all, in order to complete the Honors Program, you are
required to take 4 Honors Courses, to participate in at
least three cultural or community service events on campus,
and to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. I have
enclosed a copy of the Narrative Form that you need to complete
for each of your three campus events (I have more forms
in my office as you need them). Once you participate in
an event, you simply fill out the form, and bring it to
me so that I can put it in your file in my office. The idea
behind this part of the program is two fold: first of all,
it lets you get involved with your college community beyond
just the classroom, and this is valuable both for its own
sake and as a habit you will want to continue when you transfer
to a four year college or university - there is so much
available at institutions of higher learning that really
adds to your classroom learning. Secondly, if you have participated
in at least three events here at CCC, that will give you
something beyond your studies to write about as you are
composing application essays to four year colleges and universities
(unlike your application to CCC, senior institutions almost
always require at least one essay, as do many scholarship
applications).
For
those of you who are not able to complete four courses and
all three cultural/community service events, any Honors
Courses you do take will still appear on your transcript
as Honors Courses. Speaking of courses, you will get a letter
from me in October asking you to come in to schedule an
Honors Course for Spring, 2009. At that point I will know
all of the classes that will be available, and you can choose
one (or more) that sound appealing. You cannot register
for the Honors Courses on Webadvisor - you can only be placed
into them by me; that way we can control the enrollment
in the courses, and it gives us a chance to meet at least
once a semester to talk about your overall academic program.
You are more than welcome to come see me anytime, and here
is my contact information for this semester:
