Hello,
Everyone!
Now
that we are through the rush of priority registration, I
wanted to pass along some other cultural/social opportunities.
Before I do, however, there are two more reminders related
to advisement:
- I am including one last time the list of Honors Program
courses that we are offering in Spring, 2010. They all
still have spaces available, although the ENG 271H class
is filling quickly. So, if you want to register for any
of these classes, please contact me or your NJSTAR advisor
so that we can trip the computer flags that would allow
you to register. If you have any questions, let me know.
- If you are planning to apply to Rutgers-Camden, on Monday,
November 16th and Tuesday, November 17th, I am taking
a group of Honors Program students for an informational
interview with the Director of the Honors Program at Rutgers-Camden.
You can learn about the program, see the facilities, etc.
I have 2 people signed up so far for Tuesday and no one
yet for Monday. We will leave Blackwood at 2:15, meet
any Camden or Rohrer Campus students in the Camden Bookstore
Café at 2:45 and then walk over to the Rutgers
campus together for a 3:00-4:00 visit. We would be back
to Blackwood between 4:30 and 4:45. If you would like
to go, please call or e-mail me as soon as possible, so
that I can be sure everything is organized well. Thanks!!
Cultural
Opportunity: Lectures on Environmentally Friendly Energy
Sources. A few of you mentioned Global Warming as your Topic
of Interest in your application essays, so I wanted to pass
on this announcement from the Biology Department. People
who are currently working in organizations dedicated to
Green Energy will be presenting the following three lectures,
all at 6:30 p.m. in Madison 210, Blackwood:
- Solar
Energy - Photovoltaic and Thermal, Thursday, November
12th
- Wind
Energy - On Land and Offshore, Thursday, November
19th
- Geothermal
Energy - Ground Source Heat Pumps, Thursday, December
3rd
Any single lecture would count toward your cultural/service
requirement, but you are welcome to attend them all.
Cultural
& Social Opportunity: As I mentioned in an earlier
newsletter, the Theatre Department here at CCC is presenting
the play Pride and Prejudice in December. I thought
it might be nice to have a group of Honors Program students
go together. We could meet in the lobby of Flyer Theatre
in Lincoln Hall, Blackwood at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December
11th. The play begins at 8:00, and student tickets are $10.00.
This would also count as one of your three cultural/community
service events. Any questions? Give me a call at X4676.
Social
Opportunity - Film: I also thought it might be fun to
get a group together to go see a movie at the Ritz Showcase
theatre in Voorhees. I don't know what is playing a couple
of weeks from now, but I thought whoever was interested
could meet at 6:30 on Saturday, November 14th on the right
side of the lobby. There is a pair of black couches if you
enter the righthand set of doors behind the box office.
I will be there (I'm tall and have brown glasses and short
hair, if we haven't met) - anyone is welcome. We can then
decide which movie(s) we would want to see. If you haven't
been to the Ritz, it's very civilized - they sell fancy
coffee cheesecake in addition to the usual popcorn, etc.
I cannot
believe we are in November. I hope all is going well as
you are probably in the midst of papers, exams and projects.
Hang in there, and feel free to contact me or drop by anytime.

Hello,
Everyone!
Some
of you are so organized that I have already spoken to you
about classes for Spring, 2010, and now is exactly the time
to be thinking about such things. For all of you, please
read all of the enclosed information carefully, and feel
free to contact me with any questions. For those of you
who are new to the College this semester, on October 26th
we will begin a week of "priority registration"
for Spring, 2010 classes. You definitely want to take advantage
of this week because you can get the first choice of classes,
and you can register during this one week only without having
to make a payment until December 7th.
So,
enclosed you will find a list of all of the courses that
we are offering next semester through the Honors Program.
As you can see, it is the most extensive set of classes
to date, and we have several new courses, ART 103H, HIS
102H and THE 122H. We also have some terrific faculty teaching
the classes, so if you want to take any of them, you might
want to do so now (the professor teaching ART 103H studied
at Princeton for a year and designed this course based on
all of the things she learned as part of that experience,
the professor teaching HIS 102H was requested by some of
you, and the professor teaching THE122H regularly teaches
graduate film classes at Rutgers, so all of them bring a
lot of enthusiasm and expertise to the Honors Program).
You can take as many Honors classes as you like, keeping
in mind that you need to finish at least four total during
your time at CCC in order to complete the Honors Program.
I have
included for each of you an individualized degree audit,
which shows where any of these classes would fit into your
degree programs. For many of you I have also listed classes
under the "other courses" section at the end of
your degree audit. I want to be sure you understand that
these classes would not be required for your program, but
you are still welcome to take them if you are interested.
Next
week, October 19-23, is an advisement period before the
priority registration week, October 26-November 1. For all
Honors Classes, you must request that a computer petition
flag be tripped before you can register on line. So, if
you are an NJSTAR student, the two NJSTAR advisors, Lillie
Howard and Marie Cifelli, can trip that computer flag. For
all other Honors Program Students, you can ask me to trip
that flag by calling (856) 227-7200, X4676 OR sending me
an e-mail at jhoheisel@camdencc.edu and telling me which
classes you would like to take. I will then confirm that
I have tripped the flag, and you will be able to register
for the Honors classes along with any other courses during
Priority Registration week. If you want to speak or meet
with me about your program or the courses before you register,
I would be happy to do so. Just give me a call or an e-mail,
and we can make an appointment.
Other
Important Advisement, Scholarship and Transfer Opportunities:
- Monday,
October 26th from 12:00-1:00 in CTC 200 in Camden and
from 3:30-5:00 in Madison 107 in Blackwood, there will
be transfer/scholarship workshops just for Honors Program
students. If you are thinking about transferring for Fall,
2010, and you have not yet attended this workshop, it
is very important that you try to come because now is
when you should be sending out applications for next Fall.
We will also have information about several scholarship
and financial aid programs, which can help you better
understand how to fund your future education. If you aren't
graduating this Spring, I would still encourage you to
come so that you can understand how best to approach the
transfer process.
- Wednesday, October 28th from 10:00-2:00 in the Atrium
of the Connector Building in Blackwood there will be a
large Transfer Fair with over 20 colleges and universities
represented. This is a great time to speak personally
with a representative of that institution, to make a connection
with a person instead of just a computer, to get details
about their academic programs, to find out about the application
process, to hear of scholarship opportunities for transfer
students, etc. No appointments necessary, just stop by
the different tables.
- On
Monday, November 16th and Tuesday, November 17th, I will
be taking students who are applying to Rutgers-Camden
for Fall, 2010 on informational visits to the Honors Program
Office at that campus. We will leave Blackwood at 2:15,
meet Camden Campus students at 2:45, and go over together
from 3:00-4:00. If you need a ride back to Blackwood,
we should get back here by 4:45 or so. If you would like
to go, please give me a call at X4676 or send an e-mail
to jhoheisel@camdencc.edu so that I can put your name on the list. I have visited
the Honors Program staff at Rutgers-Camden, and they are
wonderful! Transferring into an Honors Program at a four-year
college or university can help you to become acquainted
with the new school much more quickly and to be able to
take advantage of the many opportunities that are there.
For
Graduates in Spring, 2010. Congratulations!! If I can be
of any help to you as you are applying to four-year colleges
and universities, feel free to contact me. As part of the
process, you are required to complete a "Grad Packet",
which is available in the Dean's office for your division.
The deadline to submit the Grad Packet is April 1st, so
you might want to pick one up in January, if not before,
to be sure you have all your paperwork done by that deadline.
For
those of you new to CCC. Welcome! In addition to the information
above, I have some resources in my office to help you learn
about degree programs at different colleges and universities
to which you might want to transfer. I would be happy to
meet with you anytime to talk generally about your studies,
and that is true for those of you who are undecided about
a major as well. The earlier you start thinking about such
things, the greater options you will have. We have had students
transfer from CCC transfer to a wonderful range of senior
institutions and in many different disciplines, so "shoot
for the moon".
Again,
a final plea that you register for your spring classes during
Priority Registration. It helps you to get the schedule
you want, and it helps us to know which classes will carry
or not. If you wait until later to register, the classes
might be full or canceled, so please register during that
week if at all possible.
I have
thoroughly enjoyed working with those of you who have called,
e-mailed or stopped by. You are a great group, and it has
been a pleasure to have you as part of this second year
of CCC's Honors Program. Enjoy your classes this semester,
and feel free to contact me anytime. I will send another
newsletter with cultural/service/social opportunities early
next month.
Sincerely,
Jennifer

Hello,
Everyone!
To
those of you who are new to the Honors Program, welcome,
and to those of you returning, welcome back! This newsletter
contains LOTS of information about cultural and community
service opportunities on campus this semester, as well as
some items related to scholarships/transfers/advisement.
So, grab a cup of coffee and your calendar/blackberry, and
please read this carefully.
As
you are aware, in order to be "graduated" from
the Honors Program, you are required to take four Honors
Classes total and to participate in a total of three campus-based
cultural or community service activities during your time
at CCC. For those of you who are new, a reminder that once
you participate in one of these cultural or community service
activities you need to complete a "Narrative Report
Form" and turn it in to me. It then becomes part of
your file, and in addition to hopefully being a good experience
for its own sake, it can help give you something else to
talk about when you are writing application essays to four-year
colleges and universities. The Narrative Report Forms are
available in my office (Madison 314C in Blackwood) or you
can download them from the "Forms" link at the
Honors Program Website (listed under Programs and Courses
on the CCC website: www.camdencc.edu).
Speaking
of office, my office hours this semester are:
Tuesday: 11:00-12:00 & 1:30-3:15
Wednesday: 9:00-12:00 & 1:30-3:00
Thursday: 11:00-12:00 & 1:30-3:15
If none of these times work, or if you need to meet me in
Camden or at Rohrer, just let me know, and we can make a
specific appointment. My e-mail is: jhoheisel@camdencc.edu, and my phone is: (856) 227-7200,
X4676
Service
Opportunity: Representing the Honors Program. On Wednesday,
September 30th from 11:00-2:00, the Blackwood Campus is
having its Back to School BBQ. I have requested a table
for the Honors Program, and if any of you who are current
Honors students would like to come stand with me and tell
students about the program, that would be great! If you
are interested in working with me for any part of that time,
please contact me at the e-mail address or phone number
above.
Cultural
Opportunity: Dinners with Scholars. The enclosed brochure
about the India lecture series describes six different talks
that will be happening this fall, and attending any one
of these would count as a "cultural activity".
However for the October 14, 21, 28 & November 11 lectures
there is a special opportunity for any of you who might
be interested in having dinner with the speaker prior to
the lecture. You would have an opportunity to speak to the
scholar in a smaller group, along with the host of the lecture
series, CCC History Professor, Jack Pesda. We can offer
this opportunity to three students for each of the fours
dates. If you are interested, contact me at X4676 for more
information.
Service
Opportunity: Represent the College. On Saturday, October
24th, CCC will be hosting an Open House for prospective
students. If you might be willing to serve as a greeter
or as a tour guide for that morning from 8:30-11:00, please
contact Theresa Jones at X4941. Her office asked if I could
pass this on to you all because we know that you would provide
visitors with a terrific introduction to the College!
Cultural
Opportunity: Lecture and Documentary Film about Darfur.
On Thursday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. in Madison 210 on the
Blackwood Campus, Dr. Jerry Ehrlich, a Cherry Hill Pediatrician
who has been part of Doctors Without Borders, will be speaking
about his experience in Darfur. He will be showing part
of a documentary film as part of his presentation. The lecture
is free, but there is a registration form; to register,
contact Barbara Laynor at blaynor@camdencc.edu
or call her at (856) 874-6001.
Cultural
Opportunity: Meet the Mayor of Cherry Hill. If you are
interested in local politics, this is a chance to hear Cherry
Hill Mayor, Bernie Platt, discuss new initiatives in Cherry
Hill. The meeting will be at 1:00 on Sunday, October 25
in Room 106B of the Rohrer Campus. It is free to attend,
but you need to register by contacting Barbara Laynor at blaynor@camdencc.edu or call her at (856) 874-6001.
Cultural
Opportunity: Documentary Film about Environmentally
Friendly Construction. On Thursday, October 15, at 7:00
p.m. in Civic Hall on the Blackwood campus, there will be
a screening of The Greening of Southie, a "humorous,
in-the-trenches story about the new green collar economy
and the future of the way we live". Several of you
mentioned global warming as an issue that concerned you,
so I thought this might be appealing. The film is free,
but you need to register by contacting Barbara Laynor at blaynor@camdencc.edu or calling her at (856) 874-6001.
Cultural
Opportunity: Pride & Prejudice Play. This fall the
theatre department will be producing Jane Austen's Pride
and Prejudice. Student tickets are $10, and the performance
times are as follows: December 4th at 8:00, December 5th
at 8:00, December 6th at 3:00, December 11th at 8:00 and
December 12th at 8:00. All performances will be held in
Dennis Flyer Theatre, Lincoln Hall, Blackwood Campus. Any
questions, contact Prof. Sokoloff at X4737.
Cultural
Opportunity: Study Abroad during Spring Break, 2010.
On March 12-21, 2010, Prof. Martine Howard will be leading
a study tour of four European French Speaking Nations: Switzerland,
Monaco, France and Belgium. I am telling you now because
there is a discount if you register by September 30th! If
you are interested, contact Prof. Howard at mhoward@camdencc.edu for details.
Cultural
Opportunities: Too Many to Mention Individually. The
enclosed brochure about Professional Development Opportunities
includes workshops, classes and lectures on topics as diverse
as Film, Environmental Studies, Literature, History, Economics,
Education, Religion, Politics, Autism, Writing, Anthropology
and Marine Science. As an undergraduate student, you cannot
get academic credit for any of the programs in this brochure,
but some of them show up as "audits" on your transcript,
and all provide an opportunity to learn about something
that may not be part of your regular course load. If you
are interested in attending any of the programs, just fill
out the registration form at the back of the brochure. Any
questions - contact Dianne Van Haitsma at dvanhaitsma@camdencc.edu .
Scholarship,
Financial Aid & Transfer Opportunities: The next
newsletter I send will be primarily about advisement issues,
but I wanted to pass on the following dates:
Monday, October 26th from 12:00-1:00 in Room 200 CTC Camden
Campus and Monday, October 26th from 3:30-5:00 in Madison
107 Blackwood Campus, there will be a scholarship and transfer
workshop designed just for Honors Program students, so please
try to attend if you are able. There also will be two trips
to Rutgers-Camden's Honors Program from 3:00-4:00 on November
16th and 17th, so if you think you might apply to transfer
there, you will want to save those dates as well.
So
. . . that is a lot of information, and I hope you all find
at least one thing that peaks your interest. I know it can
seem overwhelming right at the beginning of the semester,
but taking advantage of what the College has to offer beyond
the classroom is only going to add to your experience and
give you the chance to meet other motivated students. Please
feel free to contact me anytime with questions or ideas.
Take
care!

An
important reminder . . . .
Priority
registration begins on Monday, April 27th. If you are planning
to take any Honors courses in Fall, 2009 (and I hope you
are), please either call me or send me an e-mail so that
I can trip the computer flag that would allow you to register
for those courses at the same time as all of your other
classes. As you may remember, you cannot just register for
these courses without going through me or the NJSTAR advisors,
Lillie Howard and Marie Cifelli. That is for two reasons:
- So that we make sure the classes are reserved for Honors
Program students
- To
encourage you to speak with someone about general advisement
issues, if you want. If you are an NJSTAR student, you
still need to meet with Marie or Lillie to talk about
registration. If you are not an NJSTAR student, and if
you know what you are doing and don't need to speak with
me, just go ahead and send an e-mail with the courses
that you would like to take. I will trip the computer
flag that gives you access, and then I will send you a
confirming e-mail so that you know you are clear to register
for the course(s).
As
always, stop by Madison 314C anytime. Good luck as the semester
winds down.

Hello,
Everyone!
In
addition to the advisement information enclosed, there are
a number of cultural/community service opportunities happening
during the rest of the semester. Please take advantage of
any that peak your interest, and I especially hope to see
you at the scholarship/transfer workshop on April 2nd.
Scholarship/Transfer
Opportunity: I have been telling you about this workshop
for awhile, but now I have all the details. FOR THOSE OF
YOU WHO WILL BE GRADUATED IN DECEMBER, 2009 OR MAY, 2010,
this is an important workshop to help you prepare to transfer
successfully to four-year colleges and universities. At
four-year schools the admissions process happens almost
a year ahead of time, and this workshop will help you understand
what to do during the summer and fall of '09 in order to
transfer during the fall of '10. We also will have a guest
speaker, the Assistant Director of the Honors Program at
Rutgers University-Camden, who is a CCC graduate. He will
be talking both about the process of transferring from CCC
to a four-year school and about the Honors Program at Rutgers.
This workshop is only open to Honors Program students (and
their parents if they will be helping in this process and
would like to attend), so please come if you are able. We
will meet from 3:30-5:00 in Madison 107 on the Blackwood
Campus on Thursday, April 2nd.
Cultural
Opportunity, Politics/Social Work/Education: From April
3-5, Rutgers Camden is sponsoring a conference on "Children
and War". The conference is free and includes many
speakers; I thought it might be of interest because a number
of you who just joined the program chose to write about
child abuse in your application essays. One of the speakers
is Ishmael Beah, author of A Long Way Gone: Memoir of a
Boy Soldier. Details about the conference are at http://childhood.camden.rutgers.edu
Cultural
Opportunity, Film: On Tuesday, April 28th at 7:00 in Civic
Hall in the Madison Connector Building on the Blackwood
Campus, there will be a panel speaking about Films of the
60's, as part of the College's celebration of its 40th anniversary.
We will have speakers from CCC and elsewhere, including
the Assistant Director of the Honors Program at Rutgers,
Camden, who teaches film studies.
Cultural
Opportunity, Music: On Monday, May 11th at 7:30 p.m. in
Lincoln Hall, Blackwood, the Choir/Orchestra will present
"The Music of Ray Charles". Call X4364 for further
information.
Cultural
Opportunity, Dance: On Saturday, March 28th at 8:00 p.m.
in Lincoln Hall, Blackwood, the CCC dance program will present
its spring concert, "Body Talk". Call X4364 for
ticket information.
Cultural
Opportunity, Theatre: The Theatre department will present
its spring musical, "City of Angels", on May 1,
2, 3, 8, & 9 at 8:00 p.m. in Lincoln Hall, Blackwood.
Contact the theatre department at X4364 for ticket information.
Cultural
Opportunity, Art: From April 7th - May 1st, the art department
will host a Student Show in the gallery in Lincoln Hall,
Blackwood. The opening reception for the show is Tuesday,
April 7th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The opening reception is a
chance to meet the artists and hear about their works, and
grab a light snack before or after class :
Service
Opportunity: A reminder that the College is hosting an Open
House for High School Juniors and Seniors on Saturday, April
25th. If you would be interested in helping to greet prospective
students or give campus tours, please contact Rosemary Schamp
at X4941.
Cultural
Opportunity, English, International Studies & Genetics:
Also, a reminder about the ongoing Poe lecture series, China
Lecture series, and Coriell Institute Personalized Medicine
Information Session, all of which I sent you in the last
two newsletters.
So,
lots to choose from, and I hope at least some of it fits
in with and adds richness to your already busy lives. If
you need extra Cultural/Community Service Narrative Report
Forms, please drop by or send me an e-mail, and I can send
it to you electronically. Hope to see you on April 2nd.
Let me know if you have questions about any of these events.
Take
care,
Jennifer

Hello,
Everyone!
I know
you are probably in the throes of exams and papers due before
Spring Break, but I wanted to pass on a number of cultural/service
opportunities to you, since many of them are happening in
March. Also, I met last week with the Director and the Assistant
Director of the Honors Program at Rutgers Camden (the Assistant
Director is a CCC graduate). I was very impressed both with
the two of them and with their program, and I will be sharing
some more specific information about Rutgers as part of
the scholarship/transfer workshop noted below. Finally,
the list of course offerings for Fall '09 is shaping up
nicely, and I will send out a complete schedule after spring
break, so that you have the information before the advisement
period and priority registration in April. Meanwhile, good
luck with your exams/papers, and feel free to e-mail or
stop by anytime.
Service
Opportunity: On Saturday, April 25th, the College will be
hosting an Open House for high school students and their
parents. They are looking for current CCC students who might
be willing to act as greeters/hosts, and they thought that
those of you in the Honors Program would be terrific. If
you are interested in volunteering, please contact Rosemary
Schamp at X4941 or in Roosevelt 107, Blackwood Campus.
Academic/Cultural
Opportunity: Enclosed is a brochure that lists 5 programs
about Edgar Allan Poe. Some are academic lectures and some
are performances. They all sound interesting, and any one
of them would count toward the cultural/community service
requirement. Eileen Radetich of the English Department has
arranged the series, and she has brought in some terrific
programs in the past.
Academic/Cultural
Opportunity: I've also enclosed a brochure that describes
a program that would be of interest to those of you in the
sciences as well as any of you who are fascinated by the
advantages and implications of genetics research. The Coriell
Institute has started a program to gather genetic information
from 10,000 people and to use that data both to help the
individuals make better health choices and to provide information
for further genetic research. They are giving three presentations
about it at CCC this spring. If you go to the presentation
you will have the opportunity to participate in the study,
but you certainly don't have to - it's worth just hearing
about some cutting edge science, presented for a general
audience.
Scholarship/Transfer
Opportunities: Lastly, I've enclosed a flier from Vanessa
McMasters about Transfer Events this semester, and I want
to remind you that there will be a special Scholarship/Transfer
Workshop just for Honors Program students on Thursday, April
2nd at 3:30 (location to follow).
That's
all for now. Take care,
Jennifer
Hoheisel

2/06/09
Now
that the Spring semester is underway, I wanted to let you
know about some upcoming opportunities for cultural/community
service events. I also wanted to clarify the fact that you
are required to participate in at least three of these during
your whole time at CCC, not three each semester. Of course
we would absolutely love to have you take advantage of as
many as you can, but we also know that some students are
very busy juggling work, school & family obligations.
I have enclosed another copy of the narrative report form
that you fill out after these events, just in case you no
longer have one around.
We
are welcoming 24 new students to the Honors Program this
semester, so we now have nearly 100 total. I told them that
less than 3% of the students are invited to apply, so congratulations
again on being the "cream of the crop"!
I hope
those of you enrolled in Honors Courses this semester are
enjoying the experience so far - we will be asking you for
feedback, both good and bad, later this term. We also have
a nice list of course offerings shaping up for Fall, and
my plan is to send those to you in March so that you can
look them over before the advisement period/priority registration
in April.
Meanwhile,
enjoy both the snow now and the 50 degree weather we're
supposed to have this weekend!
Cultural
Opportunity: See the enclosed brochure about a series of
lectures about China. The woman who is speaking on March
11, Deanne Lee, has won 5 Emmy awards, so we are excited
that she agreed to come to campus.
Scholarship/Transfer
Opportunity: On Thursday, April 2, at 3:30 there will be
a workshop particularly designed for Honors Program students
who will be graduated in December 2009 or May 2010. It will
help you figure out what needs to be submitted to whom and
when, as you apply for both admission and scholarships/financial
aid at four year colleges and universities. Details about
the location of the workshop will be sent later in the semester,
but please save the date if you want to learn about how
to put yourself in the best possible position during the
process of transfer.
That's
all for now, but I will send along more opportunities as
they emerge.

10/06/08
Dear
Honors Students:
Now
that you are settled into your fall classes, it's actually
time to start thinking about Spring, 2009! From October
20 - 31, the College has its advisement period; this is
just before priority registration, which starts on November
3rd. For those of you who are new to CCC, this priority
registration is when you register for spring classes without
making a payment right away and when you have the best chance
of getting a schedule that you want. As you may remember,
I would like to meet with each of you during this advisement
period so that you can choose an honors course (or courses)
for Spring, 2009, and so that we can talk about your overall
academic program.
So,
can you please give me a call or send me an e-mail so that
we can schedule an appointment for that advisement period?
I have office hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday,
but I have a lot of flexibility on Mondays and Fridays too.
My phone number is: (856) 227-7200, X4676, and my e-mail
is: jhoheisel@camdencc.edu Meanwhile, there are lots of
cultural/community service opportunities listed below, as
well as a reminder about the Scholarship/Transfer workshop
on Monday, October 20th. I know that several of you have
already attended some of the lectures listed in the last
newsletter, and I also heard that a few of you are making
arrangements to tutor at the Camden Campus. Keep up the
good work!
REMINDER:
Scholarship Opportunity just for members of the Honors Program:
On Monday, October 20 from 3:30-5:00 in Madison 311 on the
Blackwood Campus, we will have three speakers: first will
be Hannah Silver, a CCC graduate who is now finishing a
PhD at Jefferson; she will be speaking about continuing
your education beyond CCC. Next will be Vanessa O'Brien-McMasters,
our Director of Transfer Services, and she will be explaining
some very important information about the deadlines and
procedures for transferring to four-year institutions: the
process is different and takes almost a year at a four year
school, so if you are planning to transfer in Fall, 2009,
now is when you need to be thinking about it. Finally, I
will be speaking about the process of applying for scholarship
and financial aid at four year colleges and universities.
So, there is lots of good information packed into a single
meeting; please do come if you are able.
Cultural
Opportunity: Music. On Monday, October 13th at 2:30, a modern
jazz group called Kneebody will be performing at Dennis
Flyer Theater on the Blackwood Campus, and there is a Q
& A period afterwords. This is a FREE performance for
students, and they are giving a second performance later
that night, at 7:00, which will cost $7 to attend. According
to Mike Billingsley, a music professor here, this group
is quite amazing, and he was very excited to be able to
have CCC be part of their tour. Any questions, contact Professor
Mike Billingsley, X4563
Cultural
Opportunity: Politics. On Tuesday, October 14th at 7:00
p.m. in the CIM auditorium on the Blackwood Campus, Marilyn
DiGiacobbe will be giving a lecture called "Inside
the West Wing", based on her seven years working inside
the White House. The lecture is FREE and is open to the
public as well as the CCC community. Any questions, contact
Professor Donnie Hughes at X4319.
Cultural
Opportunity: Film. This fall CCC is hosting an International
Film Series focusing on French Psychological Thrillers.
The next two screenings are "With a Friend Like Harry"
on Thursday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. and "Cache"
on Thursday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. Both films are FREE
and are being shown in Civic Hall, Room 205 of the Madison
Connector Building on the Blackwood Campus. Any questions,
contact Professor Pablo Echeverria, X4496.
Community
Service Opportunity: Human Services Club. If you are looking
for a way to participate in the wider community, consider
joining the Human Services Club. Past projects of the organization
include working with the Ronald McDonald House, the Anna
Semple family shelter, and the Voorhees Pediatric facility.
If you might be interested, bring your hearts and your hands
to their future meetings: Wednesday, October 15 at 3:30,
Wednesday, November 12 at 3:30 or Tuesday, December 2nd
at 3:30. All meetings are in Room 202 of the Community Center
on the Blackwood Campus. Any questions, contact Professor
Karen Marinoff at Curiokids@comcast.net or Professor Karen
Oliver at Karglen1@msn.com
Cultural
Opportunity: Book Club. The October selection for a campus-wide
student/faculty/staff book club is "the art of happiness:
a handbook for living", which is written by the Dalai
Lama and Dr. Howard Cutler. A meeting to discuss the book
will happen from 7:00-8:45 p.m. in the Cyber Café
(Room 117) of the Cherry Hill Rohrer Campus on Tuesday,
October 28. Any questions, contact Librarian Barbara Laynor
at (856) 874-6001.
Cultural
Opportunity: Drama. The fall play selection by the CCC theatre
department is Arthur Miller's The Crucible. The student
ticket price is $8.00, and the performance schedule is as
follows: December 5 at 8:00 p.m., December 6 at 8:00 p.m.,
December 7 at 3:00 p.m., December 12 at 8:00 p.m. and December
13 at 8:00 p.m. Come support your fellow students and enjoy!
Any questions, contact Professor Marjorie Sokoloff, X4737.
As
you can, there are lots of good opportunities to participate
in more than just your classroom experiences here at the
College. Don't forget that any of these events would not
only be good in their own right but would also count toward
the Honors Program requirement for three cultural/community
service activities. If you need any more of the narrative
report forms, just e-mail me or stop by my office. I look
forward to meeting with you later in the month.
Sincerely,
Jennifer

Dear
Honors Students:
Now
that you have had a chance to begin your fall classes, I
wanted to give you some more information about the Honors
Program and to tell you about several upcoming opportunities.
I plan to pass on information like this every four-six weeks,
although I will eventually switch to an electronic format
(as the college is now in the process of enabling you to
forward e-mail from your school account to your preferred
account). At any rate, there is lots to share already, so
I wanted to get this out to all of you, especially those
of you that I did not have a chance to speak with at the
President's Reception.
First
of all, in order to complete the Honors Program, you are
required to take 4 Honors Courses, to participate in at
least three cultural or community service events on campus,
and to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. I have
enclosed a copy of the Narrative Form that you need to complete
for each of your three campus events (I have more forms
in my office as you need them). Once you participate in
an event, you simply fill out the form, and bring it to
me so that I can put it in your file in my office. The idea
behind this part of the program is two fold: first of all,
it lets you get involved with your college community beyond
just the classroom, and this is valuable both for its own
sake and as a habit you will want to continue when you transfer
to a four year college or university - there is so much
available at institutions of higher learning that really
adds to your classroom learning. Secondly, if you have participated
in at least three events here at CCC, that will give you
something beyond your studies to write about as you are
composing application essays to four year colleges and universities
(unlike your application to CCC, senior institutions almost
always require at least one essay, as do many scholarship
applications).
For
those of you who are not able to complete four courses and
all three cultural/community service events, any Honors
Courses you do take will still appear on your transcript
as Honors Courses. Speaking of courses, you will get a letter
from me in October asking you to come in to schedule an
Honors Course for Spring, 2009. At that point I will know
all of the classes that will be available, and you can choose
one (or more) that sound appealing. You cannot register
for the Honors Courses on Webadvisor - you can only be placed
into them by me; that way we can control the enrollment
in the courses, and it gives us a chance to meet at least
once a semester to talk about your overall academic program.
You are more than welcome to come see me anytime, and here
is my contact information for this semester:
