Program
Descriptions
The Ophthalmic Science Department of Camden
County College welcomed its first class in the Fall of 1972. Since that
time, more than one thousand students have received superior training
in our optical programs. Current enrollment is approximately 100 students.
Ophthalmic Medical Technician Program
The Ophthalmic Medical Technician Program at Camden County College plays a vital role in health services related to vision care. The central purpose of the Ophthalmic Medical Technician Program is to develop graduates who are intellectually, morally, emotionally and socially prepared to contribute to patients and doctors of ophthalmic practices in our community.
The Ophthalmic Medical Technician Program is a ten-month program consisting of 32 credit hours of courses designed to develop Ophthalmic Medical Technicians qualified to assume the duties assigned to them by ophthalmologists.
The Ophthalmic Medical Technician program is accredited by the

Currently, there are two programs that provide
opticianry courses: the Ophthalmic Dispensing Degree Program, and the
Ophthalmic Dispensing Apprentice Program.
Ophthalmic Dispensing Degree Program
Curriculum
The Ophthalmic Dispensing Degree Program provides full time instruction
over a two- year period. Successful completion of the program earns
students the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Ophthalmic
Dispensing.
The degree program is accredited by the Commission
on Opticianry Accreditation (COA), which assures that graduates are
allowed to seek licensure and work in any state that recognizes this
accreditation. Students who complete the program are also eligible to
sit for the New Jersey State Board Exams to become a licensed optician,
after working only four months as an optician trainee. This program
also prepares candidates to achieve national certifications in opticianry
and contact lens fitting, as awarded by the American Board of Opticians
(ABO), and the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE).
Ophthalmic Dispensing Apprentice
Program
The Ophthalmic Dispensing Apprentice Program provides optical courses
on a part time basis, while the student works at least 32 hours per
week in the optical field. This track normally takes three years. Students
who complete the program are eligible to sit for the New Jersey State
Board Exams to become a licensed optician. They also are prepared to
gain national certification by the American Board of Opticians (ABO).
