CNA Guidelines

Course Description
This course uses the New Jersey curriculum for nurse aide personnel in long term care facilities, designed and regulated by the New Jersey Department of Health. The course consists of lecture, simulated laboratory and clinical exposure. This course exposes the student to long-term care settings that will enable them to assist residents under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Students must have a 2 step PPD and a note from a physician indicating good health and the ability to perform the job functions. A uniform is required, consisting of dress/pants, top, and white shoes.

Course Student Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify success-promoting, accomplishment-oriented behavior skills for the certified nurse aid.

2. Demonstrate interpersonal behaviors supportive of the development and maintenance of respectful. ethical and culturally sensitive relationships

3. Implement basic aspects of the nursing process within the scope of practice of the certified nurse aid

4. Prioritize the elements in the nursing plan of care when managing multiple patients with divergent needs.

5. Recognize the roles of leadership and management and their application to successful health care team member function.

Providing direct care to residents in long-term care

Using techniques in infection control

Interacting with patients

Providing nutrition and feeding

Obtaining vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration

Career Choices Include:

Employment in long-term care facilities

Employment in hospitals

Prerequisite to the College's Practical Nursing Program

Admission Requirements:

1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old

2. Complete a physical exam, two-step PPD and required immunizations

3. Complete a criminal background investigation

4. Complete electronic fingerprinting

5. Maintain personal health insurance

6. Maintain personal liability insurance (1,000,000/3,000,000 min). Request information
    from the nursing dept. 856-968-1329 or 856-227-7200 ext 4359.

Any cost associated with any of the above is the responsibility of the student.

Completion of all requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission to the program is on a first come first serve basis.

Upon successful completion, students will earn 4 credits in this course and be eligible to take the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services Nurse Aide Certification Exam.

CNA students may be eligible for transition into the Multi-Skilled Tech - Certificate of Achievement (MST-CA) or Practical Nursing - Academic Certificate (NUR-CT) programs. Please enquire at the nursing office for further information or view details on the college website.
