I am a teacher and I am looking to take
courses to become a certified in teaching English. Does the ESL Department
at Camden County College offer any ESL certification courses?
No. The ESL Department at CCC does not offer any ESL Certification
courses for teachers looking to become certified in teaching English
as a second language. The ESL Department only offers courses to help
students learn English as a second language.
What tests determine a student's placement
in the ESL program at Camden County College?
The proficiency placement test used to place incoming ESL
and international students is the AccuPlacer ESL test. Academic
placement in ESL courses is based on your proficiency level
as determined by the AccuPlacer ESL test.
Can a student study English part-time
in the ESL program?
Yes. However, almost all students take the full course-load in the ESL
program. The courses are very closely tied together, and if a student
tried to take just one or two of them, he/she might not understand materials
that were taught in other classes on the same level.
When a student is finished with the ESL
program, does he/she have to take more English courses?
If a degree program is being considered, it will be necessary for the
student to complete English Composition I and English Composition II.
If the goal is simply to improve English, then the student may take
whatever English classes he/she wishes, provided that he/she satisfactorily
completes the sequence of ESL courses. It is important to
work closely with an ESL advisor to select the appropriate courses every
semester!
After a student finishes courses at Camden
County College and moves on to another college/university, will he/she
have to take English classes with non-ESL students, or are there more
ESL classes that he/she can take?
Typically, by the time a student transfers to another college or university,
he/she will already have satisfied their English language prerequisites.
Additionally, he/she will have taken many content and/or concentration
courses. Also, keep in mind that students are often tested again at
their new school for English language proficiency.
Is there an attendance requirement?
Yes. Attendance is mandatory in the ESL program at Camden County College.
Each class has a specific attendance policy and the student should contact
the instructor if he/she is unclear about the attendance policy for
that course.
How does a student find out what ESL courses
are offered each semester?
There are several ways to find out which courses are offered each semester.
One way is to consult the Camden County College "Credit Schedule
of Classes" brochure that is published before each semester. Another
way is to contact the advisors of ESL/International Student Services
(856-227-7200, extension 4543). The Camden County College website can
also be consulted.
ALL students are
strongly urged to talk to one of the advisors of ESL/International Student
Services in order to assist in the students' academic plans or with
any other questions relating to the college experience.
How does a student know if he/she is ready
to take the TOEFL test?
The ESL department of Camden County College offers a TOEFL preparation
course. Students in Level IV and above are eligible to take this course.
Please contact the advisors of ESL/International Student Services (856-227-7200,
extension 4543) before registering for the TOEFL Preparation course.
Where is the ESL department located?
The main offices for the ESL department are located on the second floor
of Wilson East on the Blackwood campus. The ESL/International Student
Services office is located in CIM 205. Regular business hours during
the semester are Monday through Friday, from 8:30am- 4:30pm.
What types of courses are offered every
semester?
Every semester, the ESL program at Camden County College
offers courses on five levels in these skills: grammar,
reading, writing, listening and speaking . It is important
to work closely with an advisor to select the appropriate
courses every semester!
How long does it take to finish the ESL
program?
Generally speaking, the whole ESL program can be finished in five semesters.
However, every student comes to the college with different academic
credentials and different levels of English proficiency. Therefore,
each student will finish the ESL program at different times. It is important to work closely with an advisor to select the appropriate
courses every semester!
How far is Camden County College from
Philadelphia, Atlantic City, and New York City?
Because Camden County College is divided into three campuses, the distances
differ depending on your location.
From the Blackwood campus, Philadelphia is
about 20 minutes away by car, Atlantic City is 45 minutes away by car,
and New York City is about an hour and 45 minutes away, depending on
traffic.
From the Camden campus, Philadelphia is about
5 minutes away by car, Atlantic City is an hour away by car, and New
York City is about an hour and a half away, depending on traffic.
From the Cherry Hill campus, Philadelphia
is about 20 minutes away by car, Atlantic City is an hour away by car,
and New York City is about an hour and a half away, depending on traffic.
