Laboratory Technology - Associate in Science (LBT.AS)

Program Description
Graduates are prepared to enter a four-year program for careers in a variety of clinical and medical laboratories, academic research settings, the biotechnology industry, and diverse commercial laboratories.

Program Information

  • The program qualifies graduates to transfer to various baccalaureate degree programs in the clinical laboratory sciences. It enables graduates to perform various laboratory tasks with skill and accuracy.
  • The Associate in Science degree, together with an additional two-year program in cytology, cytogenetics, or medical technology, qualifies students to sit for the national certification examination.

Special Program Requirements
Students entering this program should have completed high school biology, chemistry and two years of college preparatory mathematics.

Employment Opportunities
The program prepares students for transfer to baccalaureate programs in the following:

  • Cytotechnology: Cytotechnologists screen human cell samples under the microscope, looking for early signs of cancer and other diseases.
  • Cytogenetics: Cytogeneticists prepare, study, identify and interpret normal and abnormal chromosomes.
  • Medical Technology: Medical technologists perform analytical and diagnostic tests on various body fluids.
  • Biotechnology: Biotechnologists apply biologic and engineering principles to develop solutions to problems in health care and the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals.
