Dental Radiology
This is a 75-hour course (25 hours of lecture, 20 hours of lab and 30 hours of clinical) designed to prepare working dental assistants for the New Jersey Dental X-ray Examination. The course will include the history and development of X-ray, its nature and properties. Practical experience will be given in intraoral radiologic techniques. Emphasis will be placed on radiation hygiene and protection and the New Jersey radiation code. Specific topics will include: effects of radiation exposure, X-ray film and its processing, correcting faulty radiographs, extraoral radiography, patient management, the New Jersey Environmental Code, and much more.
Prerequisites:
(Foreign students must contact the Dental Department (x4472) prior to application).

3. Employed as a working dental assistant in the state of New Jersey so that your employer may afford you the affiliate site for the completion of mandatory clinical hours. If for any reason the affiliate site cannot afford the student the opportunity to meet clinical requirements, it will be the responsibility of the student to select an alternate affiliation. This course requires a special application from the Continuing Education Department. No other applications will be accepted.

This dental assisting radiology course is accredited by the New Jersey Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners.
Dental Assisting Review Course
This is a review course for the working dental assistant. Topics include, but are not limited to: manipulation of dental materials, OSHA standards, local anesthesia, nutrition, pharmacology, sterilization techniques, four-handed dentistry, charting, oral health counseling, patient management, and medical emergencies. This course does not include a review of radiology.

Expanded Functions for the Dental Assistant
This is a 39-hour course available to currently certified dental assistants. It is a lecture, demonstration and participation course which will prepare the student to take the New Jersey Expanded Duties Examination. At the completion of this course, the student will be minimally proficient in expanded functions in dentistry that are approved by the New Jersey State Board of Dentistry. This course requires a special application. Please call the Continuing Education Department for more information. Proof of current certification must accompany your application at the time of registration. You cannot register without the approval of the Department, as your seat in the class will not be guaranteed.
